Why a suppressor alone is not quiet

There are two separate noises when a rifle fires, and they come from different places.

The muzzle blast is hot gas escaping under enormous pressure the instant the bullet leaves the barrel. It happens at the muzzle, which is exactly where a suppressor is, and a good can captures and slows that gas very effectively. This is the noise suppressors were invented to solve, and they solve it well.

The sonic crack is different. Any bullet travelling faster than roughly 1,125 fps at sea level drags a shock wave behind it, and that shock wave is generated along the entire flight path. It is not happening at the muzzle, so a suppressor is physically incapable of doing anything about it. It also means the crack is heard downrange, near where you are shooting, which for hunting and property work is precisely where you did not want noise.

Only the last row is the thing people imagine when they picture a suppressed rifle. Everything else is a compromise, and the compromise costs the same tax stamp.

The problem with subsonic, and how the Blackouts solve it

If subsonic is so much better, why is not everything subsonic? Because energy comes from speed and mass, and if you take speed away you are left with mass alone.

A bullet held under 1,125 fps can only carry meaningful energy by being heavy. That is why most cartridges have poor subsonic options: a .223 bullet weighs 55 grains, and at 1,050 fps it carries almost nothing and will not cycle a rifle. Downloading a normal cartridge to subsonic speeds usually produces a round that is quiet and useless.

The two Blackout cartridges exist specifically to solve that.

300 Blackout pushes 190gr to 220gr .308 bullets at roughly 1,000 fps for about 500 ft lbs, from a standard AR-15 with only a barrel change. It is the accessible answer, and it is why the cartridge exists at all.

8.6 Blackout pushes 285gr to 342gr .338 bullets at roughly 1,050 fps for 700 to 840 ft lbs, using an AR-10 sized platform or a bolt or lever rifle. It is the answer when 500 ft lbs is not enough for the animal in front of you.

.45 ACP deserves a mention because it is naturally subsonic in standard loadings. It has been quiet since 1911 and nobody had to design it that way.

Bullet construction is the part people get wrong

This is the single most important thing on this page for anyone hunting.

At 1,050 fps there is very little velocity available to drive a bullet to expand. Ordinary cup and core projectiles, and every match or FMJ load, frequently pass straight through an animal without upsetting at all, dumping most of their energy into the ground behind it. The round was quiet and the outcome was poor.

Purpose built subsonic bullets solve this two ways. Some are designed to expand at low velocity through soft alloys and deep hollow points. Others are designed to fracture, and this is where 8.6 Blackout's 1:3 twist rate does something genuinely clever: spinning a 342gr bullet past 250,000 rpm stores enormous rotational energy, and fracturing designs come apart on impact using that spin rather than relying on velocity they do not have.

So when you are choosing between two subsonic loads of the same weight, the question is never the grain number. It is whether the projectile was engineered to work at 1,050 fps. Match and FMJ subsonics are excellent practice ammunition and poor hunting ammunition.

Making a semi automatic rifle cycle subsonics

Subsonic loads produce less gas, which is a problem for gas operated rifles that need that gas to cycle. Fit a suppressor and you add back pressure, which pushes the other way. Getting both right is the practical work of running a suppressed semi auto.

The usual approach: an adjustable gas block so you can meter gas for the load you are shooting, and a buffer weight matched to it. Many 300 Blackout owners set the rifle up to cycle subsonics suppressed and accept that it is over gassed with supersonic ammunition, since that is the easier direction to live with.

Bolt actions and lever actions sidestep all of this entirely. Nothing needs to cycle, so any subsonic load works in any of them, every time. This is a large part of why bolt and lever rifles are popular with people who shoot subsonic seriously.

Matching the can to the caliber

The rule is that the bore must be larger than the bullet, and there is one exception people get wrong constantly.

A .30 caliber suppressor covers 300 Blackout, .308, .30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm ARC, .223 and 5.56. It will not cover 8.6 Blackout, which fires a .338 bullet and needs a .338 rated can. Firing 8.6 through a .30 caliber suppressor causes a baffle strike, wrecks the suppressor and endangers the shooter. If you own both cartridges, label the cans.

What to expect, honestly

A suppressed subsonic 300 Blackout or 8.6 Blackout is quiet enough that the action cycling and the bullet striking are often the loudest parts of the shot. That is the real thing, and it is why people go to the trouble.

What it is not is silent. There is still a mechanical noise, still a supersonic sounding crack if you accidentally load the wrong magazine, and still a good reason to wear protection at an indoor range. And subsonic loads are woods cartridges: effective inside about 150 yards, after which trajectory rather than energy ends the conversation, dropping roughly 33 inches at 200 yards from a 100 yard zero. Do I need subsonic ammunition to use a suppressor?

No, a suppressor works with any ammunition and makes any rifle hearing safe. But supersonic bullets still crack downrange, so if your goal is genuine quiet rather than comfort, subsonic ammunition is not optional.

Can I shoot subsonic ammunition without a suppressor?

Yes, and it is noticeably quieter than supersonic because there is no sonic crack. It is still loud enough at the muzzle to need hearing protection. Semi automatic rifles may also fail to cycle subsonics without gas tuning.
