6mm ARC ammunition, in stock. 6mm ARC is the modern answer to a question people have asked since the AR-15 was invented: how do you make it shoot properly at 600 yards and beyond without moving to a larger rifle?
The answer was a short, efficient case firing long, high ballistic coefficient .243 inch bullets, sized to fit the AR-15 magazine well. The guide below covers bullet weight, what you need to convert a rifle, and how it compares with 6.5 Grendel, which chases the same goal.
What 6mm ARC does
The AR-15 magazine well is a fixed constraint. Anything chambered for the platform has to fit inside it, which caps case length and powder capacity.
6mm ARC works within that by using a short, efficient case and a .243 inch bullet. Those bullets are long and slender for their weight, which gives them high ballistic coefficients: they hold velocity and resist wind far better than the .224 bullets 5.56 fires.
The result is an AR-15 that stays useful well past 600 yards, with mild recoil and modest powder consumption. It is the same idea 6.5 Grendel pursued in 2003, executed with newer bullet technology.
Bullet weight
| Weight | Typical velocity | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 62 to 80gr | roughly 2,900 to 3,100 fps | varmints, rapid expansion |
| 103 to 108gr | roughly 2,700 fps | the standard, best BC, distance and deer |
| 110gr and heavier | roughly 2,600 fps | maximum wind performance |
103 to 108 grain is where the cartridge lives. Those are the high BC match and hunting bullets the case was designed around, and they are what makes an AR-15 competitive at distance.
Barrels are typically 1:7.5 or 1:8, which stabilises the full range.
Converting an AR-15
Three parts change, and one is easy to overlook.
Barrel chambered in 6mm ARC, typically 18 to 22 inches, since the cartridge is bought for velocity retention and rewards the length.
Bolt with a Grendel bolt face, which 6mm ARC shares. A standard 5.56 bolt will not work.
Magazines designed for the Grendel case family. Standard 5.56 magazines will not feed the fatter case reliably.
Because it shares a bolt face with 6.5 Grendel, moving between the two is a barrel swap rather than a rebuild.
6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel?
They are close enough that shot placement matters more than the choice. 6mm ARC is slightly faster and flatter with marginally less recoil, and being newer it has better current factory and rifle support. 6.5 Grendel throws a slightly heavier bullet with a little more energy on game.
If you are starting fresh, 6mm ARC has the momentum. If you already own a Grendel, there is no performance reason to switch.
Suppressing it
6mm ARC fires a .243 inch bullet, so any .30 caliber suppressor runs it safely, as does a dedicated 6mm can. Our 6mm ARC suppressor page covers the choice in full, along with the gas system tuning every suppressed AR-15 needs.
It is a supersonic cartridge, so suppressed means hearing safe and much more comfortable rather than quiet. For genuine quiet from the same lower, 300 Blackout is the cartridge designed for it.
Frequently asked questions about 6mm ARC ammunition
What do I need to convert an AR-15 to 6mm ARC?
A 6mm ARC barrel, a bolt with the Grendel bolt face, and Grendel family magazines. The lower receiver and buffer system carry over unchanged.
What bullet weight should I buy?
103 to 108 grain for almost everything. Those are the high ballistic coefficient bullets the cartridge was designed around and what makes it worth having over 5.56.
Is 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel better?
Very close. 6mm ARC is slightly faster with less recoil and newer support. Grendel carries a slightly heavier bullet. They share a bolt face, so switching is only a barrel change.
Can I hunt deer with 6mm ARC?
Yes, with a controlled expansion bullet in the 103 to 108 grain range at sensible ranges. It carries considerably more energy than 5.56 at distance.
Can I use a .308 suppressor on it?
Yes. A .243 bullet is comfortably inside a .30 caliber bore, and that can will cover most of the rest of your safe as well.
What twist rate does it need?
1:7.5 or 1:8, which is standard on 6mm ARC barrels and stabilises everything from 62 to 110 grain.
Will my 5.56 magazines work?
No. The case is fatter and needs Grendel family magazines to feed reliably. This is the part people most often try to skip.
Is there subsonic 6mm ARC?
Not in any useful factory form. The cartridge is built entirely around velocity retention at distance. For quiet shooting from the same rifle, 300 Blackout is the purpose built answer.
