8.6 Blackout barrels. The barrel is the single most important component in an 8.6 Blackout build, because it carries the specification that cannot be corrected afterwards: the 1:3 twist rate. Everything else on the rifle can be swapped later. This cannot.

1:3 twist, and why it is the whole cartridge
Most .338 barrels run around 1:10. 8.6 Blackout runs 1:3, roughly three times faster, and it does two jobs at once.
It stabilises very long, very heavy bullets at low velocity, which slower twists cannot reliably manage. And it stores enormous rotational energy in the projectile: a 342 grain bullet leaving a 1:3 barrel at 1,050 fps is spinning past 250,000 rpm.
That spin is what makes expanding and fracturing bullets open at subsonic speed. At 1,050 fps there is not enough velocity to drive a conventional bullet to upset, so it passes straight through. Spin it hard enough and a projectile engineered for that spin comes apart anyway.
A slower twist barrel chambered in 8.6 will chamber and fire the ammunition, and it will still be quiet. What it will not do is stabilise the heaviest subsonics or deliver the terminal performance the cartridge exists for. Our twist rate guide covers this in depth.
Length: shorter than you think
8.6 Blackout finishes burning its powder in roughly 8 inches, which is unusual and genuinely useful.

Read the subsonic column. Across eight extra inches you gain about 30 fps, which is nothing, because subsonic loads are deliberately capped under the sound barrier in any barrel. Supersonic loads gain more and flatten out quickly too.
So a 12 inch barrel with an 8 inch suppressor is about the overall length of a bare 20 inch hunting rifle and gives up almost nothing. Twelve to sixteen inches is the practical range, and buying length for subsonic performance buys weight and nothing else.
Thread pitch and suppressor matching
Check the muzzle thread before ordering a suppressor, or the barrel, depending on which you are buying second. 8.6 barrels commonly use 3/4x24 or larger, unlike the 5/8x24 standard on .30 caliber rifles.
And the rule that matters most: 8.6 Blackout fires a .338 inch bullet and requires a .338 rated suppressor. A .30 caliber can will not clear the bullet, and firing through one causes a baffle strike that destroys the suppressor and endangers the shooter. See our 8.6 Blackout suppressors page.
Platform
8.6 Blackout is based on a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor case and needs an AR-10 sized receiver with SR-25 pattern magazines, a short action bolt rifle, or a lever action. It will not fit an AR-15.
On a gas gun, plan for an adjustable gas block from the start. Running heavy subsonics and supersonics through the same rifle with a suppressor fitted is exactly the situation that needs metered gas.

What twist rate do I need?
1:3, and it is not negotiable. It is what stabilises 342 grain subsonic bullets and generates the spin that makes fracturing projectiles work at 1,050 fps.
Will a slower twist barrel work?
It will fire the ammunition and stay quiet, and it will not stabilise the heaviest bullets or deliver their terminal performance. You would pay for a specialist cartridge and get none of its advantages.
What barrel length should I buy?
12 to 16 inches. The powder burn finishes around 8 inches, so longer barrels add roughly 30 fps subsonic and simply make a suppressed rifle unwieldy.
What thread pitch do 8.6 barrels use?
Commonly 3/4x24 or larger, rather than the 5/8x24 found on .30 caliber rifles. Confirm on the specific barrel before ordering a suppressor mount.
Can I fit an 8.6 barrel to my AR-15?
No. The cartridge is based on a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor case and needs an AR-10 sized platform, a short action bolt rifle or a lever action.
Do I need an adjustable gas block?
On a gas gun, effectively yes, particularly if you run both subsonic and supersonic ammunition with a suppressor fitted.
Does a longer barrel make it quieter?
Marginally, since a little more powder burns inside the barrel. The effect is small and it costs you handling, which is the opposite of why people choose this cartridge.
What suppressor does the barrel need?
A .338 rated one. The bullet is larger than a .30 caliber bore, so no .308 rated can is safe regardless of how it is threaded.
