An 8.6 Blackout rifle is a .338 calibre platform built around a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor case, designed by Q LLC to throw the heaviest practical subsonic bullet through a short, suppressed barrel. It is not a scaled up 300 Blackout and it is not a long range cartridge. It is a purpose built quiet hunting and close range rifle.

Two things separate a real 8.6 Blackout rifle from a rechambered anything. The first is the receiver size: the case head demands an AR-10 sized action or a bolt action, so a standard AR-15 lower will not work. The second is the twist rate, which is 1:3 from the factory. That spin is what makes heavy expanding bullets open reliably at roughly 1,000 fps, which is the problem that has always limited subsonic terminal performance.

Semi automatic or bolt action

Both are legitimate and they suit different shooters.

A semi automatic AR-10 pattern rifle gives you fast follow up shots, which matters when you are working a group of hogs. The trade is gas system tuning: subsonic and supersonic loads generate very different pressures, and a rifle set up to cycle heavy subsonics reliably may be over gassed with supersonics. 8.6 Blackout finishes burning its powder charge at around eight inches, which makes barrel choice easier than it looks. Subsonic loads are capped below the sound barrier by design and run roughly 1,000 to 1,060 fps whether the barrel is eight inches or sixteen, so a short barrel costs you almost nothing. Supersonic loads do benefit, gaining roughly 150 to 200 fps between eight and sixteen inches.

The twist rate is not a preference. A slower twist will stabilise the bullet on paper but will not spin it fast enough for expanding subsonic designs to perform as engineered. Pairing a suppressor

The can must be rated for .338, not merely capable of passing a .338 bullet. A .30 calibre suppressor will not accept the round and using anything under specification risks a baffle strike. Dedicated .338 suppressors are generally quieter on this cartridge than oversized .45 calibre cans, because the tighter bore contains gas more effectively.
