What to check before you buy any complete rifle

Four specifications decide whether a rifle will do what you want. Read them in this order, because the first two cannot be changed later without a new barrel.

A rifle that gets all four right is ready to suppress out of the box. One that gets the twist wrong will fire the ammunition, stay quiet, and quietly remove the reason you bought the cartridge.

Choosing the platform

AR-15 pattern covers 300 Blackout, 338 ARC, .223 and 5.56, 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC. It is the lightest and most adaptable route, and it is the one that needs gas tuning if you shoot subsonic ammunition suppressed.

AR-10 pattern is required for .308, 6.5 Creedmoor and 8.6 Blackout. Heavier, more capable, and the gas tuning question gets harder still when the same rifle has to cycle 342 grain subsonics and 210 grain supersonics.

Bolt action sidesteps every gas problem. Nothing cycles, so any load works every time and a direct thread suppressor is perfectly reasonable. This is the simplest and quietest configuration available, and it is why so many suppressed hunting rifles are bolt guns.

Lever action has become a genuine option since 8.6 Blackout lever rifles arrived. Short, fast handling, no buffer tube so the suppressed rifle stays a sane length, and permitted for hunting in places where semi automatics are not. Our lever action guide covers the trade properly.

Matching the rifle to the job

Suppressed hunting in cover. A 12 to 16 inch 8.6 Blackout or 300 Blackout, bolt or lever if you can, with an expanding subsonic load. Effective and genuinely quiet inside about 150 yards.

Mixed use. An AR pattern rifle with an adjustable gas block, zeroed for supersonic hunting loads with a magazine of subsonics alongside. Swapping between a 2,000 ft lb load and a quiet one without touching the rifle is the practical appeal of the platform.

Distance. 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 on a 20 inch barrel or longer. Suppressed, these are hearing safe and comfortable rather than quiet, because the bullet is supersonic and cracks downrange.

Volume and training. A 16 inch 5.56 carbine. Cheap to feed, especially by the bucket, and the caliber every accessory is built around.

Barrel length, and why the Blackouts break the usual rule

Most cartridges reward barrel length with velocity. 8.6 Blackout and 300 Blackout largely do not, and that is deliberate.

Both finish burning their powder in roughly 8 inches. Subsonic velocity is capped under the sound barrier by design, so across eight extra inches of barrel you gain around 30 fps, which is nothing. Supersonic loads gain more and flatten out quickly too.

So a 12 inch barrel with an 8 inch suppressor comes out around the overall length of a bare 20 inch hunting rifle and gives up almost nothing. This is one of the few places in rifle shooting where short does not mean compromised, and it is why complete rifles in these cartridges are usually offered short.

What you still need after the rifle

A complete firearm is not a complete setup. Budget for the rest at the same time.

The suppressor has to match the bullet diameter: .30 caliber for 300 Blackout and everything smaller, .338 rated for 8.6 Blackout and 338 ARC. Then the tax stamp and the wait that goes with it.

The ammunition is where the rifle either works or does not, so buy a box before you buy a case and confirm it cycles and groups. Browse the caliber index for what we load.

Optics deserve thought on a suppressed rifle, since a can adds weight forward and changes how the rifle sits. And a chronograph is worth more here than on any other kind of rifle, because confirming a subsonic load is genuinely subsonic is not something you can do by ear.

Frequently asked questions about complete firearms

Is a complete rifle better than building one?

It is more certain. The twist, thread pitch and gas system are already matched, which is exactly where builds go wrong. Building gives you control over each part and costs more time and usually more money once you have corrected the first mistake.

What twist rate should the rifle have?

1:3 for 8.6 Blackout, 1:5 for 338 ARC, 1:7 or 1:8 for 300 Blackout. This is the specification to verify before anything else, because it is cut into the barrel and cannot be changed.

Do complete rifles come threaded?

Ones intended for suppressor use do, and the pitch matters: commonly 1/2x28 on 5.56 and many 300 Blackout barrels, 5/8x24 on .30 caliber, larger on .338. Match it to your suppressor mount.

Will it cycle subsonic ammunition?

A gas gun needs tuning for it, ideally with an adjustable gas block, and more so with a suppressor fitted. Bolt and lever actions cycle any load without adjustment because nothing runs on gas.

What barrel length should I choose?

12 to 16 inches for 8.6 Blackout and 300 Blackout, since the powder burn finishes around 8 inches. 20 inches and up for 6.5 Creedmoor and .308, which genuinely reward length.

Can one rifle shoot subsonic and supersonic?

Yes, and most owners do. They will not share a zero, and the difference can be several inches even at 50 yards, so record both and mark your magazines.

Do I need a suppressor to make it worthwhile?

For the Blackouts, largely yes. They were designed around suppressed subsonic shooting, and without a can you are carrying a heavy slow bullet and getting little of the benefit.

Bolt, lever or semi automatic?

Bolt for the simplest and quietest hunting setup. Lever for fast handling and where semi automatics are restricted. Semi automatic for capacity and follow up speed, accepting the gas tuning that comes with it.
