Twist rate, the specification that cannot be corrected later
Everything else on a build can be swapped. The twist rate is cut into the barrel, and if it is wrong the only fix is a new barrel.
Heavy subsonic bullets are long and slow, and long slow projectiles need aggressive spin to stabilise at all. That is why the Blackout family uses twist rates found nowhere else in rifle shooting.

Barrel length, and why short works here
Most cartridges reward barrel length with velocity. The Blackouts largely do not, which is the whole point of them.
8.6 Blackout finishes burning its powder in roughly 8 inches, and 300 Blackout is similar. Subsonic velocity is capped under the sound barrier by design, so extra barrel adds almost nothing: across eight extra inches you gain roughly 30 fps, which is nothing at all. Supersonic loads gain more, and even that flattens out quickly.
The practical consequence is that a 12 inch barrel with an 8 inch suppressor is about the overall length of a bare 20 inch hunting rifle, and it gives up almost nothing. That is why so many suppressed builds run short barrels, and why this is one of the few places in rifle shooting where you are not trading performance for handiness.
Contrast that with 6.5 Creedmoor or .308, which genuinely want 20 to 26 inches, and with 6.8 SPC, which relies on velocity and loses it quickly in a short tube.
The gas system, and why it needs to be adjustable
This is where suppressed builds go wrong most often, and it is worth understanding before you buy an upper.
A suppressor raises pressure at the muzzle, and that pressure travels back down the gas tube. The rifle then cycles on more gas than it was set up for: the bolt unlocks early, brass is thrown hard and forward, gas vents out of the ejection port into your face, fouling increases and felt recoil gets worse rather than better.
Subsonic ammunition pulls in the opposite direction, producing less gas to begin with. A rifle that runs subsonics unsuppressed may be violently over gassed with a can fitted, and one tuned for suppressed supersonic use may fail to cycle subsonics at all.
The answer is an adjustable gas block, which lets you meter gas at the source, usually paired with a heavier buffer such as an H2 or H3. If you are specifying a build from parts, put the adjustable block on the list at the start. Fitting one later usually means pulling the handguard off a finished rifle.
Muzzle threads
Check the thread pitch on any barrel before you buy a suppressor, or the other way round.

Mixed thread pitches across a safe are normal and they are not a problem if you use a quick detach suppressor system: you fit the correct muzzle device to each rifle and the can itself never changes. Direct thread is lighter and shorter and ties the suppressor to one pitch.
Bolts, magazines and the parts that must match the cartridge
Barrel and bolt have to agree. 300 Blackout uses a standard 5.56 bolt, which is a large part of why converting an AR-15 is so easy. 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC each need their own bolt face. 8.6 Blackout needs an AR-10 sized platform entirely.
Magazines matter too. 300 Blackout feeds from standard AR-15 magazines, though very heavy subsonic loads seated long can be fussy. 8.6 Blackout uses SR-25 pattern magazines. Check both against the specific loads you intend to shoot rather than assuming.
A short build order that works
If you are specifying a suppressed rifle from parts, decide in this order and you will not have to undo anything.
First the cartridge, because it dictates the platform. Then the barrel: twist rate, then length, then thread pitch. Then the gas system, adjustable from the start. Then the suppressor, matched to the bullet diameter, with a mount that fits the thread. Then the ammunition, which is where the whole thing either works or does not, so browse the caliber index and confirm your rifle likes the load before buying a case of it.

What twist rate do I need for 8.6 Blackout?
1:3. It is what stabilises 342 grain .338 bullets at subsonic speed and generates the spin that fracturing projectiles rely on. A slower twist will fire the ammunition without delivering its performance.
What barrel length is best for a suppressed build?
For 8.6 Blackout and 300 Blackout, 12 to 16 inches captures nearly all the performance, because the powder burn finishes around 8 inches. For 6.5 Creedmoor or .308, 20 inches and up, since those cartridges genuinely reward length.
Do I need an adjustable gas block?
If the rifle will be shot suppressed, effectively yes, and especially if you run subsonic ammunition. It is the only fix that treats the cause rather than the symptom, and it is far easier to fit during a build than afterwards.
Can I convert my AR-15 to 300 Blackout?
Yes, with a barrel change. 300 Blackout uses the same bolt, magazines and lower as 5.56, which is why the conversion is the easiest in the AR world. Expect to tune the gas system if you shoot subsonics suppressed.
Can I build 8.6 Blackout on an AR-15?
