8.6 Blackout Conversions: What Can and Cannot Be Rebarrelled
If you already own a rifle and are wondering whether it can become an 8.6 Blackout, the answer depends on four things: bolt face, action length, magazine and twist rate. A barrel alone is rarely the whole job. The four things that decide whether a conversion is possible

Bolt face. 8.6 Blackout is built on a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor case, which shares the .473 inch case head used by .308 Winchester, .30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor itself. If your rifle already has a .473 inch bolt face, you are most of the way there. If it has the smaller .378 inch face used by 5.56, .223 and 300 Blackout, you need a different bolt, and on some actions that is not available at all.
Action length. The case is short, so a short action is fine and a long action wastes magazine space. The constraint is usually the magazine rather than the receiver.
Magazine. This is the step people forget. A fat .338 bullet on a short case does not reliably feed from magazines designed for slimmer cartridges. Even where the bolt face is right, the magazine may need replacing or modifying.

Converting from 300 Blackout
This is the most commonly asked conversion and the most commonly misunderstood. 300 Blackout is built on a 5.56 case, with a .378 inch case head. 8.6 Blackout is built on a 6.5 Creedmoor case, with a .473 inch head. They are not related cartridges despite the shared name and designer.
On an AR platform this means a 300 Blackout AR-15 cannot become an 8.6 Blackout at all. The bolt, barrel extension and receiver are all wrong, and there is no path that does not amount to buying a different rifle.
On a bolt action the picture is better but still not simple. A 300 Blackout bolt rifle needs a new barrel, a new bolt or bolt head with the larger face, and almost certainly a new magazine. At that point you have replaced everything except the receiver and the stock, and the sensible question becomes whether a purpose built rifle costs less than the sum of those parts. Frequently it does.
Converting from .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor
This is the conversion that genuinely works. Both cartridges already use the .473 inch case head that 8.6 Blackout requires, so the bolt is correct as it stands.
On a short action bolt rifle chambered in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, a conversion is realistically a barrel job. Fit a 1:3 twist 8.6 Blackout barrel, headspace it properly, confirm the magazine feeds the shorter fatter round, and you have a working rifle. Many gunsmiths treat this as routine work.
On an AR-10 pattern rifle in .308 the same logic applies to the upper. The bolt face is right, so a new barrel and often a new gas system length gets you there. Check that your specific AR-10 pattern accepts the barrel extension, since AR-10 is not standardised the way AR-15 is.

What a gunsmith actually does
A straightforward conversion on a compatible action is: remove the old barrel, fit and chamber the new 1:3 barrel, set headspace with go and no go gauges, verify the bolt closes correctly on both, confirm the magazine feeds from full and from a single round, thread the muzzle to your chosen pitch if it is not already, and test fire.
Where it gets more involved is when the bolt has to change, because bolt head availability varies enormously between actions. On some rifles a replacement bolt head is a catalogue part. On others the bolt is not modular and a whole new bolt has to be sourced or made, which is where conversion costs stop being sensible.
Ask your gunsmith about all four items before agreeing a price. A quote for a barrel job on a rifle that also needs a bolt and magazine is not a real quote.
When buying complete makes more sense

Add up the parts honestly. A barrel, a bolt or bolt head, a magazine, gunsmith labour, headspacing and muzzle threading. On many starting rifles that total lands close to the price of a purpose built 8.6 Blackout, and the purpose built rifle arrives headspaced, proofed and warrantied.
Conversion makes clear sense when you already own a good .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor short action with an action and stock you like, because then you really are only buying a barrel. It makes much less sense when the starting point needs a bolt change, and no sense at all from an AR-15.

Verify the specification with the maker
Rifle model lineups change frequently, and manufacturers add and drop chamberings without much announcement. Before planning any conversion around a specific model, confirm the current bolt face, action length and available bolt heads with the manufacturer directly rather than relying on a forum post or a parts diagram that may be several years out of date.
The same caution applies to factory 8.6 Blackout offerings. The category has grown quickly, and what is available this season may differ from last. Ask, rather than assume, and get the twist rate in writing.
Suppressor and thread pitch
If the point of the conversion is suppressed shooting, and it usually is, plan the muzzle thread at the same time as the barrel. Thread pitch should match a suppressor you already own or intend to buy, and the can must be rated for .338, not merely capable of passing a .338 bullet.

After the conversion
Confirm headspace before firing, then chronograph rather than trusting published figures. Subsonic loads need to stay comfortably under the sound barrier in your barrel, and a load running 1,080 fps in one rifle may creep transonic in another, which sounds terrible and shoots worse.

Barrel contour, length and gas
On a bolt gun the barrel decision is mostly about contour and length. A heavier contour steadies the rifle and soaks up heat, and a lighter one carries better. Since 8.6 Blackout finishes burning its charge by around eight inches, there is no velocity argument for a long subsonic barrel, and short barrels keep overall length sane once a suppressor is fitted.
On a gas gun the calculation is harder. Gas port size and gas system length have to suit the new cartridge, and a system set up for .308 will not necessarily run 8.6 Blackout correctly across both subsonic and supersonic loads. This is the single most common source of disappointment in AR-10 conversions, and an adjustable gas block is the usual remedy. Budget for one from the start rather than discovering the need at the range.
Headspace, proofing and doing it properly
Headspace is not a step to economise on. It should be set with go and no go gauges, verified with the actual bolt that will be used, and confirmed before the rifle is fired. A conversion that groups well but headspaces marginally is a problem waiting to happen.
Ask your gunsmith to test fire and to confirm feeding from a full magazine as well as a single round, since the two behave differently. If the rifle is going to be suppressed, test it suppressed, because gas behaviour and cycling change once a can is on the muzzle.
Keep the paperwork. If you ever sell the rifle, a documented conversion by a named gunsmith with headspace confirmed is worth considerably more than an undocumented one, and it saves the next owner from guessing at the specification.
Is a conversion worth doing at all?
Worth asking plainly. A conversion earns its keep when the donor rifle is genuinely good and genuinely yours, meaning an action and stock you shoot well and would keep regardless. In that case you are buying a barrel to unlock a cartridge, which is a sensible trade.
It stops being sensible the moment the parts list grows. Bolt, magazine, gas block, labour and headspacing add up quickly, and every one of those is a component a purpose built rifle already includes, matched and proofed. If you find yourself replacing three of the four things that define a rifle, you are building a rifle, not converting one, and you should price it as such.
The middle case is the honest one: many owners convert because they want to, not because it is cheaper. That is a perfectly good reason, provided you go in knowing the economics rather than discovering them halfway through.
Frequently asked questions about 8.6 Blackout conversions
Can a 300 Blackout rifle be converted to 8.6 Blackout?
Not on an AR-15, because the bolt face, barrel extension and receiver are all wrong. On a bolt action it is technically possible with a new barrel, a new bolt or bolt head and usually a new magazine, but by then you have replaced nearly everything and a purpose built rifle often costs less.
Can I convert a .308 rifle to 8.6 Blackout?
